MINUSMA

This section covers how we support the UN with embedding behavioural science, publications and learning.

We support UN Entities with embedding behavioural science

We support UN Entities along their behavioural science journey. We work practically with UN Entities in developing understanding of the value add of behavioural science for their organisations, fostering and promoting champions and developing plans for embedding behavioural science application in their organisations.

This includes:

  • Helping scope and prioritise projects, hire specialists, connect with academic partners, and design and implement projects, based on Entity capabilities and project needs.

  • Engaging with UN senior leadership to enhance buy-in and understanding of behavioural science, as well as help develop and realise concrete plans to apply behavioural science in their organisations.

Examples of this work include:

Working with OHCHR senior levels to develop and implement a plan for behavioural science

Working with FAO and WFP to scope and prioritise projects and connect with partners

Working with DGC and the the ILO to foster further behavioural science application

Behavioural science refers to the scientific and evidence-based study of human behaviour, examining how people actually behave, make decisions and respond to programmes, policies and incentives. By using rigorous methods, behavioural science can provide a better understanding of what interventions work and what impact these interventions have or will have in the real-world. It is a broad and multidisciplinary field that combines, among others, aspects of cognitive psychology, social psychology and behavioural economics. Behavioural science can help explain why some approaches do not work as well as hoped, and why other approaches are more likely to succeed.

UN Behavioural Science has been featured in the following publications

We provide learning and capacity strengthening at working and senior levels

We provide a virtual and in-person behavioural science learning programme for working and senior levels.

The programme covers introductory areas, specific policy topics identified by Entities and more tailored support on how to embed behavioural science into UN Entities’ work.

We also routinely share insights outside the UN including presentations to Member States, at conferences like Behavioural Science and Policy Association and universities such as the London School of Economics and University of Cambridge.

Take a look at a summary of our publications  here.

Join us!

The UN Behavioural Science Group connects colleagues from across the UN and beyond. We welcome non-UN members in an observer role. (Observers include individuals from academia, governments, international organisations, civil society, the private sector and many other areas).
